Why File Preparation Makes or Breaks Your Jewelry Print

You've spent hours crafting the perfect ring design in CAD software. The curves are elegant, the stone settings are precise, and the proportions feel just right. Then you send the file to a manufacturer — and it comes back with problems. Wall sections are too thin, meshes have holes, or the support geometry collapses during printing. Sound familiar?

Preparing a jewelry design for 3D printing is a skill in itself, and getting it right saves you time, money, and a great deal of frustration. Whether you're working in Rhino, MatrixGold, ZBrush, or another platform, these practical steps will help you produce clean, printable files every time.

Step 1: Check Your Wall Thickness

The most common reason jewelry 3D prints fail is insufficient wall thickness. In casting-ready resin printing, shanks, prongs, and decorative elements need to meet minimum thickness requirements to survive both the print and the casting process that follows.

  • Ring shanks: Minimum 1.2mm for cast metal; thicker for sterling silver
  • Prongs: At least 0.8mm at the base, tapering to no less than 0.6mm at the tip
  • Filigree and lace work: No finer than 0.5mm for resin prints intended for casting
  • Pavé walls and bezel settings: 0.5–0.8mm depending on the metal used

Use your CAD software's analysis tools to highlight thin sections before you export. In Rhino, the Check command and third-party plugins like RhinoGold's analysis features are invaluable here.

Step 2: Close All Naked Edges and Heal Your Mesh

A watertight model is non-negotiable for 3D printing. Open polysurfaces, naked edges, and non-manifold geometry will cause your slicing software to misinterpret the model, leading to failed prints or visible defects in the wax or resin output.

Before exporting, run a mesh analysis. In Rhino, use AnalyzeDirection and ShowEdges to catch problem areas. If you're exporting as an STL or OBJ file, use a repair tool like Meshmixer, Netfabb, or the built-in repair function in your slicer to clean up any remaining issues.

Pro tip from our workshop: Always export at a mesh tolerance of 0.01mm or finer for jewelry. Coarser settings introduce stair-stepping on curved surfaces that becomes visible after casting and polishing.

Step 3: Orient for Printability

The orientation of your model on the build plate affects surface quality, support placement, and structural integrity. Work with your manufacturer to determine the best print angle — many complex pieces benefit from a 45-degree tilt to reduce supports on visible surfaces.

When designing, keep in mind that supports leave witness marks where they contact the model. Place those contact points in areas that will be hidden, sanded, or that fall inside a setting.

Step 4: Choose the Right File Format

For jewelry 3D printing destined for lost-wax casting, the most widely accepted file formats are:

  • STL — Universal, widely supported, no color data
  • OBJ — Supports texture maps if you need to communicate surface detail
  • 3DM (Rhino native) — Preferred if your manufacturer works in Rhino
