Using the wrong format — or the right format with the wrong settings — can result in poor surface quality, failed prints, or costly delays. If you're a jewelry designer, independent brand, or retailer working with a manufacturing partner, understanding the key 3D printing file formats for jewelry will save you time, money, and frustration.

The Most Common 3D Printing File Formats in Jewelry Manufacturing

Not all 3D file formats are created equal. Here's a breakdown of the formats most widely used in professional jewelry production:

  • STL (Stereolithography) — The industry standard for most 3D printing workflows. STL files describe the surface geometry of a 3D object using triangular meshes. They're universally supported, easy to share, and compatible with virtually every slicer and printer. However, STL files don't carry color or texture data, which is usually fine for jewelry casting workflows.
  • OBJ (Object File) — A flexible format that supports color and texture information. While OBJ is common in general 3D modeling, it's less frequently used in jewelry manufacturing unless color differentiation in the model is needed. It works well with programs like ZBrush and Blender.
  • 3DM (Rhino 3D) — Native to Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino), this is the go-to software for professional jewelry CAD design. Many manufacturing workshops, including ours at JewelCAD Design Ltd, accept 3DM files directly. Rhino's precision NURBS modeling makes it ideal for clean, manufacturable geometry.
  • JCD / JewelCAD Native Files — JewelCAD Pro has its own native format, widely used across Asian jewelry manufacturing hubs, especially in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen. If you're designing with JewelCAD software, your manufacturer should ideally be fluent in this format.
  • SLC and CLI formats — These slice-level formats are used internally by certain industrial 3D printers. You're unlikely to work with these directly, but it's good to know they exist in high-end production environments.

Which Format Should You Send to Your Manufacturer?

Even the right file format won't save a poorly prepared model. Here are practical steps to ensure your design is print-ready:

  • Check for mesh errors. Use tools like Meshmixer (free) or Netfabb to detect and repair holes, non-manifold edges, or inverted normals before sending your STL.
  • Set the correct scale. Always specify the unit (millimeters are standard in jewelry). A ring that looks perfect at 1:1 scale could print as a charm if the units are mismatched.
  • Mind your wall thickness. Minimum wall thickness for resin 3D printing in jewelry is typically 0.8mm–1.2mm. Thinner walls may not survive printing or burnout in the casting process.
  • Include a reference image. Send a rendered image or screenshot alongside your file. It helps your manufacturer verify they're interpreting the design correctly.
  • Communicate your material expectations. Let your workshop know whether the print is for casting (wax or castable resin), display, or prototype purposes. This affects how the file is processed and printed.
